We first saw the term in the Church of St. Sofia in Istanbul which originally was decorated with ornate mosaics. It had been converted into a mosque in the 15th century. Since Islam does not permit images of God, saints, or prophets lest people be tempted to worship the graven images, the ornate mosics of Christ and the saints were covered with plaster. Recently the mosaics have been discovered under the plaster. Since then, Turkey has been embroiled in debate as to whether or not they should destroy the historical Islamic plaster patterns in order to uncover the historical Christian mosaics. The first mosaic to be completely restored was entitled "Christ the Pancreator" where I assume that Pancreator means "Creator of All."
